SAS Rogue: The Clandestine Life of Peter Weaver

Audio Format

Overview

Major Peter Weaver's military career is remarkable for its breadth, from the Royal Tank Corps, to the infantry, but also as an engineer and on colonial and special operations. Hearing accounts of the rise of Hitler, he joined the Territorials. The outbreak of war saw him rapidly promoted, volunteering for the Auxiliary Units, the secret force created in case of German invasion. His section of Dorset Regiment men set high standards in training. Considered too important for his commando, they were instead later recruited into the SAS. Paddy Mayne, SAS commander, was impressed by Weaver's leadership during a near disaster. Weaver parachuted into France on Operation Bulbasket, one of the few to escape a deadly ambush there. After specialist ski training, he fought in Germany on Operation Archway and was present for the liberation of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Following VE Day he landed in Norway, nominally disarming the German garrison, but finding time for sports, drink, and local women. Part of a little known SAS deployment in Crete, he later had spells with the Sudan Defence Force and training the Greek Army. More conventional soldiering with the Berkshire Regiment still saw him in combat in the Canal Zone. Weaver lived his life to the full, enjoying the Army, fast cars, and beautiful women. Drama followed him but he always managed to get away somehow.

Author Information

Major Peter Weaver's military career is remarkable for its breadth, from the Royal Tank Corps, to the infantry, but also as an engineer and on colonial and special operations. SAS Rogue: The Clandestine Life of Peter Weaver is told using his own words, supported by extensive research to confirm what at times seem unbelievable tales. Dr. William Ward has a long interest in World War II military history, both as a researcher and model maker. Becoming the voluntary Auxiliary Units coordinator for the Defence of Britain Project in 1995, he developed substantial expertise in the field and many good friendships. This led to researching the links between Auxiliary Units and the SAS and he has been fortunate to meet many veterans of both, along with their families. In 2010, he joined Coleshill Auxiliary Research Team (CART), becoming a major contributor to their website, staybehinds.com. Through a CART event, he met Major Weaver's family and others involved in his story. In recent years he has also been involved in archaeological explorations of Auxiliary Units Operational Bases, providing talks and displays and has visited many Operation Bulbasket locations in France. He has helped many families uncover the wartime history their father or grandfather would or could never talk about. Hannibal Hills has been a ""performer"" from the beginning. At school, he trained in acting and theater arts at Southampton College, and also received a diploma in television. Although he performed in many stage plays (by Lorca, Brecht, Stoppard, Pinter, and, of course, Shakespeare), he also helped produce original works, and soon found himself mostly in the directing role. More recently, in March of 2020, he won the ""Best Newcomer"" award (no small feat for this middle-aged guy!) as part of his regional media's annual theater awards. In March of 2021, he was thrilled to receive three Independent Audiobook Award nominations. Hannibal was also a top wedding and memorial celebrant, before he could no longer fight the urge to leap into audiobook performance. It's a supreme pleasure for Hannibal to bring good writing off the page and into the minds and hearts of listeners. As a professional narrator, he devotes himself to understanding a text, and giving a book life with his voice-in a way that creates true entertainment, enlightenment, or merely an escape. Hannibal's vocal style is warm, clear, and sophisticated, with a depth of emotion from connecting with each project he takes on. Although he specializes in dramatic fiction, especially involving complex plots and highly charged emotion, his nonfiction is performed in a way that brings the truth of the text to both the heart and mind of the reader.
