OverviewThis second edition continues to provide a comprehensive foundation for both the practical and theoretical challenges associated with sandwich structures. Expanding on the first edition, the author presents a wide range of problems found in the literature, covering topics such as buckling, post-buckling, free vibration, and dynamic response under various loading conditions. A new section on sandwich construction with functionally graded facings is included, all explored through a consistent, unified theoretical framework. The core governing equations are derived in orthogonal curvilinear coordinates, incorporating shallow shell theory and addressing key aspects such as strain-displacement, constitutive, motion, and compatibility equations. With its clear theoretical approach, this edition is an invaluable resource for engineers and researchers seeking a deeper understanding of sandwich structures in both practice and theory. Key features of the book include an introduction to advanced, general nonlinear geometric theory for sandwich structures, incorporating initial geometric imperfections for both incompressible and compressible cores; a treatment of shallow shell theory for comprehensive analysis; a presentation of functionally graded sandwich structures with material variations for nonlinear scenarios; an examination of compressible cores, including local wrinkling and global responses, with transverse core displacements addressed through two types of power series expansions. New features of the second edition include a new theory on asymmetric anisotropic laminated composite sandwich plates and shells has been introduced; a comprehensive, detailed discussion of boundary conditions, a new section on thermal buckling and the theory of asymmetric anisotropic laminated composite sandwich plates and shells for both weak and strong core types; a combined section on plate and shell buckling, a chapter on post-buckling revised to incorporate the effects of immovable edges on the post-buckling behavior of cross-ply and angle-ply laminated plates and shell-type sandwich structures, a new consolidated chapter on compressible core theory applications, three new appendices supplement the theory presented throughout the book.
