Overview
Attersee - Bad Ischl - Gmunden - Hallein - Mondsee - Salzburg - Tennengau - Traunsee - Wolfgangsee Located in the border triangle between Upper Austria, Salzburg and Styria, the Salzkammergut includes three different types of landscape: the largely flat foothills of the Alps, the low mountain range zone and the alpine area of ??the northern Limestone Alps. A total of 76 larger and smaller lakes glitter embedded in it, surrounded by lush green meadows and impressive mountain basins. The unbelievable diversity of this mountainous region has been a magnet for human settlement since early times. Already the Illyrians around 3000 BC. recognized the value of the ""white gold"", salt. Salt mining around Hallstatt and Lake Hallstatt characterizes the entire region to this day. The Germanic word for salt is the inspiration for this: ""Hall"". Until modern times, salt production guaranteed the prosperity of the region, Only in the 20th century did tourism become established as a further source of income. From the tradition of summer resorts during the Austrian Empire, the Salzkammergut has developed into one of Austria's best-developed tourist regions. Both in winter and in summer, the diverse region attracts people from all over the world to the breathtaking mountain world between the Dachstein, Totem Mountains and Höllengebirge. The Salzkammergut has also made a name for itself from a cultural point of view: since 1997 the region has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its pretty little towns, unique folk customs and traditions and historically valuable finds from the Hallstatt culture period. The cultural highlight and architectural synthesis of the arts in the region is undisputedly the Mozart city of Salzburg. From the Hohensalzburg Fortress, the view sweeps from the blue ribbon of the Salzach over a symphony of glittering lake landscapes to the wild, rough mountains of the northern Limestone Alps with their deep gorges, gurgling glacial streams and imposing rocky peaks. Imperial cities, crystal-clear lakes and impressive natural spectacles accompany you on the Salzkammergut cycle path, which mainly leads along river and lake banks in two large loops. The southern loop of the Salt & Lakes Tour starts in Salzburg and leads through the Tennengau Salzach Valley. Due to the low gradients, this tour is ideal for families with children. The northern loop also begins in Salzburg and is signposted through the Salzburg Lake District. There is also a sporty variant via Hallein, the Wiestal reservoir, the Hintersee, the Fuschlsee, Schaming. Wallersee, Obertrumer See and Mattsee. At St. Georgen you come across the Salzach, which you follow via Oberndorf to Salzburg. Nine other long-distance cycle routes (including two mountain bike routes) and 19 regional routes complete the repertoire of this map. Cycle paths and routes with information about surface and traffic density. Selected street names. Precise gradient and distance information. Selection of the most important tourist information. Waterproof and tear-resistant paper. Thoroughly researched and permanently updated. With the cartographic route information you can start your trip confidently, because all the necessary information is already compiled for you: road surface (paved or unpaved), traffic density, hill slopes, distance information tourist infrastructure such as inns and lodging establishments, as well as the cultural and scenic attractions of the region.
