Overview

Saliva is a clear, colorless, slightly acidic fluid secreted by the major salivary glands parotid, submandibular, and sublingual and numerous minor salivary glands distributed throughout the oral mucosa. It consists predominantly of water, along with electrolytes, proteins, enzymes, and immunological components. Saliva performs several vital functions including lubrication of oral tissues, facilitation of mastication, swallowing, and speech, initiation of digestion through salivary amylase, and maintenance of oral hygiene by mechanical cleansing and antimicrobial activity. Its buffering capacity helps regulate oral pH, while calcium and phosphate ions contribute to enamel remineralization. Saliva also plays an essential role in taste perception by dissolving food substances. Any alteration in salivary flow or composition can significantly affect oral health, leading to increased susceptibility to dental caries, periodontal disease, and oral infections.
