OverviewThe figure of Saint Baldwin of Rieti, a Cistercian monk and direct disciple of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, represents a valuable and still little-studied testimony to the early expansion of the Cistercian Order. Trained at Clairvaux, Baldwin absorbed its spirituality and discipline, becoming in turn a key figure in spreading Bernard's legacy within the Italian context. This brief monograph offers a renewed interpretation of his life, intertwining historical sources, hagiographic tradition, and reflections on the role of Cistercian spirituality in medieval Europe. The approach, attentive both to documentary evidence and to cultural and theological developments, makes it possible, despite the scarcity of sources, to convey the complexity of a figure who stands between the monastic rigor of Clairvaux and the distinctive religious features of the Rieti region. The work is addressed to scholars, researchers, and readers interested in medieval monastic history, providing an innovative contribution to the understanding of the relationship between Saint Bernard and his circle of disciples, as well as to the dissemination of Cistercian charism in central Italy.
