Overview

The story about life at a sports field known as City Park. Located in the suburb of Crawford in South Africa. This story, narrated by Henry Africa, takes us from 1974 to 1994. In 1994 Nelson Mandela is released and addresses the people of Cape Town and South Africa from the balcony overlooking the grand parade. The freedom South Africans enjoy today evolved from Soweto and from the suburb of Crawford where Alexander Sinton and Belgravia High schools were located. This was in the vicinity of City Park, with Sinton right next to the fields of City Park. This 20 year period was seen through the eyes of Henry Africa, a man voted as the Best Baseball Player of 1984 at the national tournament in Port Elizabeth. The next year he was voted as the Best Baseball player in the Western Cape. The year was 1985. We were still 9 years from democratic elections, but we were not to know that yet... The riots of 1976 took place around the areas of Crawford. Tyres were burnt. Cars and buses set alight. Children died and adults were detained without trial. A baseball player was part of the police force and acted against his own community. Time would heal the wounds. But that healing would take a very long time to arrive... Truth and reconciliation would come well after 1994 to the families who were once united in the games played at City Park. From different suburbs they came, played baseball, softball, rugby and netball. All this happened in the years of apartheid. Our eyes were to be opened by the 1976 riots all across South Africa. By the end of the riots we would never be the innocent children we once were. The live bullets they had fired at us, and the teargas they had thrown would never be forgotten. We were treated like caged animals. In the areas we had been forcibly moved to, perhaps we were caged without fencing. South Africa still licks its wounds and this account of events will expose some truths and rubbish others. But it is simply an account of the life of a sports field called City Park and a story of the people who played their sports there...
