Author Information

The author was a Naval Reserve Chaplain in Lexington, KY for six years prior to going on active duty in 1976. At the time he was Professor of Religion and Director of the Interdisciplinary Humanities Program at Transylvania University. His first active duty assignment, at the age of 44, was to Destroyer Squadron Fifteen, home-ported in Yokosuka, Japan. This was followed by a tour of duty with the Marines of 1st FSSG, Camp Pendleton, CA. He had a most satisfying tour as commissioning Chaplain of USS PELELIU (LHA 5). This tour was followed by assignment to Naval Submarine Base, Bangor, WA. At 54 he commenced his first tour as Command Chaplain, USS MIDWAY (CV41), Yokosuka, Japan. After a tour at the Chapel of Hope, CFAY he returned for an unprecedented second tour as Command Chaplain of the same aircraft carrier. That twilight tour saw him participating in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm (The Gulf War) and Operation Fiery Vigil (evacuating persons from Subic Bay after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo. He retired on board the MIDWAY as she headed back to CONUS for decommission- ing and returned to Silverdale, WA in 1991 where he resumed college teaching as adjunct faculty at several local colleges. In April 1992 he was privileged to offer the prayers for MIDWAY's de- commissioning. His last involvement aboard the MIDWAY was to offer the prayers for the Banquet on the flight deck for the MIDWAY Veterans Association 2013 Reunion.
