Running Toward Fire: Following the Warrior Path

Overview

When crisis and catastrophe are at the door, some people flee from peril and others run straight into the line of fire. Nate Boaz's gripping memoir, Running Toward Fire, chronicles a journey of profound courage, sacrifice, and self-discovery. From a young boy inspired by his war-hero grandfathers to a Marine leading intelligence operations in combat, Boaz's narrative is as riveting as it is deeply introspective. Reflecting on intense memories of service and war, Nate grapples with the enigmatic beauty of combat, the weight of duty, and a deep but forgotten longing for camaraderie. Growing up in the shadows of heroes, Nate's path was shaped early on by family tales of valor and service. But it's his personal experiences-from the polished floors of the Naval Academy to the deadly streets of Baghdad-that form the crux of his story. Throughout the memoir, Nate examines the anarchy of war, the nuances of leadership, and the cost of service. Whether he's recounting harrowing battles, the emotional rescue of American POWs, or the quiet introspection that follows, Boaz captures the essence of a warrior's heart. Yet the book is more than just a war memoir-it's a clarion call for understanding and supporting the heroes among us; the very men and women who, when others sheltered and all was lost, picked up a rifle and ran toward the sounds of chaos. If you have wondered what drives a person to seek danger or serve something bigger than themselves, Running Toward Fire is an inspirational testament to what created the heroes around you today, and how you can carry part of the load.

Reviews

"""Nate Boaz's memoir is a raw and deep introspective of his life as a Marine warrior and patriot serving in the Iraq war and the impact of this service on his soul and spirit. From his humble beginnings to his drive to carry on a family tradition, the book serves as both a warning about the trauma of close combat on our well-being and the promise of redemption when we face these traumas squarely and honestly."" - H. Stacy Clardy III, LtGen, USMC (Ret) ""Running Toward Fire is an honest, wide-open account of Nate Boaz's journey from boyhood to manhood, from anxious teen to combat leader, and from struggling veteran to transformed citizen. The book is partly a thrill ride driven by someone who experienced the most iconic military events of the early stages of our country's conflict in Iraq."" - Carl ""Sam"" Mundy III, LtGen, USMC (Ret) ""In the tradition of Tim O'Brien and Eugene Sledge, this was a book that took decades to write and it was well worth the wait! It is probably the most honest portrayal of combat experiences I have ever read."" - Fred Padilla, MajGen, USMC (Ret) ""Nate Boaz captures the experience of those of us who had the privilege to serve just after 9/11. I could smell the cordite and taste the coffee in a metal canteen cup. Reading this book while sitting in a chair at home, twenty years later, I had that pit-in-your-stomach feel of a close-quarters gun fight. More importantly, Nate honors our comrades who didn't make it back. This is an honest and important account."" - Nate Fick, NYT Best-selling author of One Bullet Away ""A call to arms to serve those who have served. Running Toward Fire is a riveting and deeply personal account of what it means to be a Marine Officer before-and after-combat."" - Blake Hall, CEO and Founder, ID.me ""This memoir is not just a recounting of Nate's experiences; it's a beacon for anyone seeking to understand the values of courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment to a cause greater than oneself."" - Jon Macaskill, Retired Navy SEAL Commander"

Author Information

Nate Boaz navigates the realms of human potential and tech innovation as the Vice President of People Strategy at Microsoft, yet his odyssey began on a vastly different terrain. As a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, Nate served as a Counterintelligence / Human Intelligence Officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, participating in Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. During two decades in the corporate realm, Nate found his narrative veering back to the profound lessons gleaned on the battlefield, channeling these insights into his writing. His journey led him through roles as a Partner at McKinsey & Company, a Senior Managing Director at Accenture, and a Managing Director at Roark Capital Private Equity Firm, before nestling into his current position at Microsoft. An alumnus of Harvard Business School, Nate's voracious pursuit of knowledge and personal growth remains unabated. Outside the corporate world, Nate's heart beats for veteran welfare and storytelling. He serves on the Board of Patrol Base Abbate, a veteran nonprofit dedicated to providing ""a place for those who served."" His proudest roles, however, are those of a father and a writer, continually exploring the tapestry of global affairs, leadership, and personal growth on his Medium blog.
