Overview

Born into a life of challenges, including adoption, epilepsy, and an acquired brain injury that resulted in blindness, this memoir takes the reader on a journey through domestic violence, running from Australia in fear for her life, and finally triumphing as a strong, independent woman where running has become a pleasure and a joy. The power of the human spirit and its ability to rise in the face of adversity is a theme that runs strongly throughout this memoir.

This book expresses Janice's experiences, determination, and commitment to thriving despite what life throws her way. She inspired, educates, and empowers within these pages. Martin Stewart, 2019 Blind Australian of the Year & Blind Citizens Australia's David Blyth Award Recipient ******* The type of characters that we are is coloured and shaped by our history. Some have a history that is difficult or trying and so they colour themselves in hues of blue, black and grey. Others have a history full of joy and validation and colour themselves from the palette of the rainbow. Yet others, refuse to give into a dark cheerless past and colour themselves from the rainbow adding so much more. To say that Janice is a colourful character is an understatement, her indefatigable character is undersold by that term. She most certainly is vibrant, but this is not borne of a rich past of joy and privilege, her story is dark and cheerless, a past which she has not just risen over, rather she has leapt out of the depths and said, watch out world, here I come! I have heard her story as only a psychologist does and seen how she will not give in. The abuse she has been subjected to horrifies me, but of greater impact is the way that she has taken the cliched pigs ear and woven a silk purse. I would hope we could all have that strength of character. I recommend that everyone should read a book about such a character, it will most certainly be inspirational. Raymond Inkpen, Principal Clinical Psychologist *******Living up to her motto, If I can do it, anyone can, this book will take you on a journey that will bring you to laughter and tears, but most of all to a realisation of how strong the human spirit truly is. MAJOR Bob Varcoe, MTrgDev, AdvDipThai, DipAWT, DipFM, DipRM, DipGov
