OverviewRowdies is a fictional celebration of folklore surrounding the advent of major league baseball in the United States. It concerns the fortunes of one Charles Connie Griffin, a hard-luck laborer in 1880s St. Louis. In looking for a way to feed his family, he has a chance meeting with legendary G. E. Devlin, The Greatest Man Ever to Grace the Diamond. Connie joins Devlin's nine and takes the field with stars such as Tommy Rube Bennett, a gossipy pitcher who becomes his roommate, Martin King Fisher, a catcher lusting for the ladies, and Ulysses Dummy Johnson, a great hitter overcoming a severe handicap, among others. With Devlin in the line-up as well, the St. Louisans spend much of the season breezing to the pennant, overcoming ball ground riots, train wrecks and racist elements who want nothing more than to ruin an up-and-coming League talent. However, Connie is soon forced to choose between family and the game he has come to love. Devlin himself, in the twilight of his fabled career, faces off-the-field challenges almost as daunting as the ones his ancient body rues while on it. Most of all, a post-season challenge from a rival league will likely pit Devlin's nine against a megalomaniacal manager and his team of replicas, should they stave off a furious comeback from a hated competitor. Will the St. Louis Professional Base Ball Club, led by Connie and Devlin, defy the opposition and win it all?
