Overview

When 4-year-old Sidney hears his parents say that they'll take him to Ghana sometime so he can see his roots, he sets out on a journey to understand what they mean. Do our roots grow out of our feet like roots of a tree? Sidney soon learns that roots don't grow out of our feet, they're inside of us! Roots aren't something you can see, but something you are and can learn about through storytelling and tradition. Through his quest to find his roots, Sidney learns he is a beautiful mixture of cultures and traditions that stretches to every corner of the Earth.

Author Information

Megan Jordi Brody grew up Mennonite in the farmlands of Indiana. After living in Latin America, she became an immigration lawyer and co-founded the first non-profit in New Mexico dedicated to representing low-income immigrants in deportation proceedings. She now lives in Alexandria, Virginia with her husband and two children, who are biracial, multicultural and bilingual. She manages her own immigration law practice and loves going on new adventures with her family on the weekends. Megan wrote this book in response to her own son's questions about his race and identity at a young age. She hopes this book will help ground him and other mixed race and multicultural children as they discover their roots and begin to shape their own identities. Natalie Pujols is a first-generation Dominican artist who has spent the last 15 years immersed in art. Living in New York City, she is captivated by the many diverse faces and lifestyles that surround her daily, each one a vibrant reflection of the human experience. Inspired by the power of depicting people and their stories, she brings narratives to life with her illustrations.
