OverviewRoots and Resilience began as a living legacy for my children and grandchildren and grew into a two-volume memoir exploring the cultural, political, and economic forces that shaped my family's search for identity and belonging across six generations. From fragile beginnings in cloistered Jewish communities of Central and Eastern Europe, my ancestors journeyed to the immigrant neighborhoods of New York City and, ultimately, Chicago. Volume One follows that path through the suburbs of Chicago and the Jewish enclave of Skokie before expanding into my adult life beyond the boundaries of traditional Jewish neighborhoods. Volume Two carries the story forward into the lives of my grandchildren, tracing the choices, relationships, and turning points that shaped our family's evolving story. Along the way, universal tensions come alive: assimilation and cultural memory, loyalty and independence, risk and security, and the search for roots while exploring new horizons. Both volumes examine the political landscapes that moved me to action, from the civil rights, antiwar, and environmental movements of my college years to later activism shaped by experiences in the Middle East and Latin America. Viewed through a Jewish lens but grounded in universal human experience, this memoir speaks to anyone who has felt like an outsider while striving for belonging in a society that rewards conformity. It also reflects the generational shifts in faith, identity, and community that have shaped modern American life. Threaded throughout are adventures in the mountains and rivers of the American West, including self-guided whitewater raft trips and high-altitude hikes that became central to my sense of freedom and purpose. Above all, Roots and Resilience is a story of family: the enduring force that sustains our sense of self, inspires our highest ideals, and anchors our search for belonging across generations.
