OverviewThis new edition of a volume first published in 1949 provides a clear account of the complex imperial coinage struck between 238 and 253 and is based on many decades of research. It covers the reigns of Gordian III, Philip, Trajan Decius, Trebonianus Gallus and Aemilian with their families and the usurpers Jotapian and Pacatian. The coinage of each emperor is discussed in the introductions to the reigns and a general introduction discusses wider issues relating to the coinage: denominations, weights, metal, reverse types and hoards. As with other recent volumes in the series, medallions are now included. A total of 3,351 types are listed in the catalogue, roughly double the number described in the first edition. These are all illustrated in the plates wherever possible (3,232 coins on 112 plates). There are 172 illustrations in the text. This volume will be an indispensable guide for historians of this crucial period of Roman history.
