OverviewExcerpt from Roman Antiquities: Recently Discovered on the Site of the National Safe Deposit Company's Premises, Mansion House, London Of the original position and extent of Roman London a great deal of speculative opinion has been recorded. Various localities have been assigned to its first settlement. While some have placed it on the south side of the river, others locate it on the rising ground east of vvalbreok, and a third view, that of the late W. H. Black, would associate it with the space between the western bank of this watercourse and the river Fleet. It is true that at all these places there are abundant illustrations of romano-british occupation, but the confusion which has arisen with respect to the varying descriptions is from their serving to illustrate, not the London of the first century of its existence.
