Immensely enjoyable to read. It moves along at a cracking pace and the description of the race itself is quite breathtaking. There is a level of scholarship clearly at work here as well as a remarkable lightness of touch. John Bale is to be congratulated....I actually found the book difficult to put down!.
-Jeffrey Hill, De Montfort University, author of Sport, Leisure and Culture in 20th Century Britain
