Overview

Robert Lowth is one of the best-known names in the history of English grammar writing. His Short Introduction to English Grammar set a standard of comprehensiveness and precision that was never afterwards equalled in the writing of English traditional grammars, especially in his treatment of English syntax. This new set comprises all his important publications. A Short Introduction to English Grammar [1762] is reprinted in later representative editions, in the form in which it came to be generally known to later generations. In addition, Lowth's other important contributions to exegetical literature, and biography are included, so that a fair picture of his intellectual breadth may be gained. These include his Lectures on the Sacred Poetry of the Hebrews (Latin and English editions); The Life of William of Wykeham (founder of Winchester College and New College, Oxford); Isaiah, A New Translation Included also is Peter Hall's Sermons and other Remains of Robert Lowth which contains a Memoir of Lowth.
