OverviewIt's known today as Gloster Hill, but during the Korean War it was simply Hill 235. Overlooking the Imjin River it was destined to become as emotive a name in British military history as El Alamein and Rorkes Drift where handfuls of British soldiers wrote their names in history. The battle of the Imjin River and the story of the gallant 'Glorious Glosters' has been well documented and is part of this story; but only part. The young National Serviceman who arrived on the hill that day had already had a full and adventurous life after running away from home to go to sea, before he even got to Korea. It's what happened to him after the famous battle that this story is really about. It's the true one of a man who, with only a few hundred pounds modernised and created a whole new industry, before going on to do the same with another one. He built two huge companies, employing thousands of people in the UK and abroad, both of them quoted on the Stock Exchange. For John Bairstow the road from Gloster Hill was as exciting as the one that had led him to it.
