She has take courses with Art Instruction Schools of Minneapolis, Minnesota. She has also taken courses with the Institute of Children's Literature. Barbara Appleby was born in Noblesville Indiana but calls the scenic Lake Cumberland in Kentucky home. She is the youngest of three children and inspired by almost everything around her. Her books are a reflection of her magical childhood with a mom and dad that always had an adventure planned for the weekends with children and grandchildren. Her passion for fantasy and the natural world lay behind the creation of her children's picture books. She loved art work as a small child. Her cousin that was a commercial illustrator lived next door. He let her borrow his books one by one until she had mastered them all. This started her on a journey that was to last a life time. Wining numerous awards as a child and young adult for her fine arts painting and illustration she knew this is what she wanted to do.
