Rio Pinguino: My Brother is Hangry!

Overview

What happens when your little brother is hungry, cranky, and absolutely not willing to wait? Rio Pinguino has a mission: keep his little brother Eggo distracted long enough for Papà to finish making pancakes. It sounds simple. It really isn't. Rio Pinguino: My Brother Is Hangry! is a warm and funny bilingual picture book about siblings, big toddler feelings, and the beautiful chaos of family mornings. With every attempt to help going hilariously sideways - a rainy backyard, a startled Mamma, a very opinionated cat - Rio's patience and big-brother instincts are put to the test. The perfect read-aloud for families with toddlers and preschoolers, this story captures the kind of everyday moments that feel enormous to little ones, told with gentleness and a lot of humour. The complete story is presented in both English and Italian on every page - making it an ideal choice for bilingual families, Italian heritage households, language learners, and anyone who wants to raise children with a love of more than one language and culture. My Brother Is Hangry! celebrates sibling kindness, emotional resilience, and the simple joy of sitting down to breakfast together. 28 full-colour pages - Bilingual English-Italian - Ages 2-6 - Perfect for reading aloud From Sognidoro Press - bilingual picture books with real heart.

Reviews

""A beautiful, well written and translated story! My whole family loved it! Highly recommended it!"" ""We read this book with our 4-year-old and he really loved the story, especially the part where Eggo was ""hangry"" and Rio had to distract him while breakfast was being made. The message about sharing and helping your little brother really came through in the part where Rio shared his food and suddenly everything was okay. The bilingual Italian and English text is also really neat and makes it fun to read in different ways. The illustrations are sweet and look well drawn by a loving artist. Very sweet story about family, patience, and siblings looking out for each other."" ""I love how this book presents the text in both English and Italian in different colours to make it clear which language is which. The dynamic translation method chosen always works best in children's books. The way the neologism ""hangry"" is explained in a small footnote is a great introduction to such concepts too.The story itself is funny. I don't imagine many penguins eat pancakes keep a pet cat but that surely makes it relatable. The illustrations have a trendy modern style about them and there's a page about the author at the end.""

Author Information

Rob Chalmers is the author behind Rio Pinguino and co-founder of Sognidoro Press. Based in Brisbane, he's spent years writing for the love of it - drawn to big fantasy worlds and the power of a good story. But it was becoming a papà that brought his writing home. What started as bedtime stories for his own two boys grew into a mission: to create bilingual picture books that celebrate Italian language and culture without leaving anyone out. Books that are fun to read aloud, easy to love, and just as at home in an English-speaking household as an Italian one.Rob's partner Elisa - born and raised in Sicily - brings the Italian heart to every story. Together they've built Sognidoro Press around a simple idea: that language is something to share, not gatekeep. When he's not writing or working, you'll find him with his two energetic boys, planning the next trip back to Italy, or eating something very Italian. Elisa was born and raised in Sicily, surrounded by family, food, and the kind of traditions that stay with you. Now a mamma of two in Brisbane, she's passionate about her boys staying connected to Italian language and culture - and that passion is at the heart of every Sognidoro Press book. She translates each story into Italian, making sure it feels natural and alive, not just correct. For Elisa, it's never just about learning a language. È sentirsi più vicini a casa.
