Rigged: The Misadventures of a Classic Wooden Sailboat

Overview

Rigged recounts a series of amusing and poignant descriptions of the owner's misadventures whilst attempting to rig, sail and restore his classic wooden sailboat Rufus. Like an ornery teenager, Rufus presents a series of challenges to her owner and ingrains herself, over a period of decades, as a close family member to the extent that she cannot be ignored, only doted upon, loved and enjoyed. The tale of Rufus in Rigged and her role in our family isn't just about the trials of a family and their classic wooden sailboat, but rather how Rufus became the vessel whose happenstance has woven the cloth of our family's identity. My father, the greatest teller of bedtime stories, takes the reader on a journey that depicts Rufus as a threaded connection to sailing, nature and the re-invigoration of his relationship to his father. Rigged is a purely Canadian story written by a Canadian for readers of all ages, not just mariners, and takes place in the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia. The book will appeal to any person of any age who enjoys humour, entertainment and outdoor adventure. It will amuse anyone who, driven by passion, has at some point in their lives attempted a project and experienced its failure or success and can envision a parallel to their own ironic life experiences.

Author Information

Tony Cond was born and raised in the southern Ontario town of Oakville, moved to Whitby as a teen and spent every summer of his early years in Bracebridge with his family and Rufus. As an adventure-seeking young man, his introduction to water sports began at his infancy, with the encouragement of his parents, in the Muskoka Lakes region. This developed into a lifelong enthusiasm for SCUBA diving, camping, competitive sailing and eventually a thirty-year career in the Royal Canadian Navy as a Marine Systems Engineer. His enduring passion for sailing was initiated by his father's 1947 International 14 racing dinghy, Rufus, which continued with a successful national Albacore racing campaign; then with the Canadian Forces Sailing Association (CFSA) on the West Coast, and later in Ontario, through the ownership of a CL16 that he raced with his daughter, Gillian, and with his son, Stu, as his crew. On return to the West Coast, he sailed competitively in ocean yachts with several naval engineering friends, again with the CFSA.Tony holds a diploma in mechanical engineering, a bachelor of science degree, a masters' degree in engineering and a Naval Engineering Certificate of Competency Part II. He is a professional engineer in British Columbia and a long-standing member of the Canadian Institute of Marine Engineering. He is currently working as a consulting engineer in the marine sector.Tony and his wife, Debbie, live in Victoria, British Columbia, where they enjoy gardening, classic vehicles, sailing and travel.
