Overview

Developments in this field have been so extensive since the author's work Introduction to Differential Geometry that a new book with particular emphasis on recent work in Riemannian geometry is clearly necessary. This new work includes an elementary account of twistor spaces which will interest both applied mathematicians and physicists as well as presenting recent developments in the theory of harmonic spaces, commutative spaces, and mean-value theorems previously only available in research papers. The final chapter provides the only account available in book form of manifolds known as `Willmore surfaces', illustrated by a series of computer-generated pictures.

Reviews

a timely grand review of the whole field of modern differential geometry ... It includes a concise and very readable account of twistor spaces which should appeal especially to mathematicians and physicists; and it clearly describes recent developments on sundry topics hitherto treated only in research papers. * Aslib Book Guide, vol.61, no.10, October 1996. *
Written in a delightfully readable fashion and many interesting references are furnished for the historical development of various topics. This book will be a valuable reference, especially to those interested in the differential geometry of immersed surfaces. --Mathematical Reviews

The author's insight, clarity, and expository talent have made this book a classic. In this edition it will be of even more value to students of mathematics and philosophy. --Mathematical Reviews
