"The Rhodesian ridgeback is a type of dog that can be identified by the ""ridge"" of hair that runs in the opposite direction of the rest of its coat along its back. The breed is named for its distinctive ridge of hair. The Rhodesian ridgeback, often known as a Ridgeback, is a type of hound that was developed in what is now Zimbabwe but has its roots in the rest of Southern Africa. Khoikhoi people and later European settlers are credited with first domesticating them. These canines were bred to be multipurpose hunting companions, with an emphasis on tracking and restraining big wildlife like lions. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are distinguished by their strength and agility as well as their characteristic short coat and lean, muscular frame. They have a solid reputation for being trustworthy, bright, and protective. Although they are generally friendly toward members of their own families, they may be suspicious of strangers, making them excellent security dogs. Ridgebacks, with their hunting pedigree and resulting high prey drive, require daily walks and mental challenges.
