Part 4: Lower Rhine · From Cologne to Hook of Holland The last part of the cycle tour along the Rhine leads from the Cologne Bay to the North Sea. Industry, culture and a surprising amount of nature characterize the route between Cologne, Düsseldorf and Duisburg. North of Duisburg, the broad Niederhein meanders through a much sparsely populated, idyllic landscape. The Roman excavations in Xanten and the Wunderland Kalkar are among the last highlights on the German side before you cross the Dutch border in Millingen. Directly behind the border, the Rhine branches out into several branches. On excellently developed and signposted cycle paths, you cycle through the area between the various branches of the Rhine, which has hardly been developed for tourism, pass beautiful small towns and historic windmills and finally reach the metropolis of Rotterdam.
