(Hons.) degree in Biological Sciences in 1969. He received his D. Phil. (Biology) in 1972 from the University of Sussex, England under the supervision of Professor J.R. Postgate. Dr. Calcott’s research interests revolve around the reaction of microbes to stress, primarily freezing and thawing and starvation. He is particularly interested in the role of cell wall and membrane structures in determining the resistance of organisms to stress, continuous culture of microbes and the role of small molecules such as cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP in cell metabolism.
