Depression is something many face every day. But some who do not suffer from this illness, do not always see that depression is more than just being sad. Those who face it, need more than to just pull themselves up by the bootstraps. In Return to Joy, author Marsha Combs shares her personal story from her battle with depression. She came from a loving family with a wonderful life, with her mother, father, and young brother. Growing up, she was a cheerleader and had great friends. In college, she met the man who would become her husband, and he would go on to become a professional basketball player. Together, they would have two handsome sons. She was later diagnosed with breast cancer, and during this same time, she lost her mother to cancer. These together spent her spinning. She felt herself falling, grasping, and searching to find happiness. She found herself unable to enjoy things she should love. The cancer scared her, but because she is a survivor, she sought help. By seeking help, she was able to receive it. It wasn't easy, and it didn't happen overnight, but she was able to use the tools provided to her to work through what she was feeling. And now, she is happy with her family and enjoying life again. With Return to Joy, Marsha seeks to help those who are suffering from depression to see that they can come out on top. After losing a friend to depression, she felt it important to share her own story to help others see that they too can make it through the fight with depression.
