They were not able to leave it with Mary and Joseph because it was too large for the tiny babe. So they took it with them on their journey back home knowing that in the future, they must return and give the cloth to the Christ child. Little did they know it would take years before they saw the child again, well after he was grown and had suffered terrible agonies. The man Jesus would finally receive the gift as the miracle of resurrection took place.
