Orthodontic treatment is not complete when the active phase of tooth movement ends. The true measure of long-term success lies in the stability of the achieved results. Teeth, once moved, have a natural tendency to return toward their original positions - a phenomenon known as relapse. This tendency is influenced by factors such as periodontal fiber elasticity, occlusal forces, continued growth and development, and pressure from surrounding musculature. Retention, therefore, is a critical phase in orthodontic care. It is the process of maintaining teeth in their corrected positions long enough for surrounding tissues - including the periodontal ligament, gingiva, and bone - to reorganize and adapt.
