OverviewOur nation has been trying to rein in the costs of healthcare for 65 years now. Getting affordable, quality, healthcare is still a major concern for most Americans. No matter what we have tried to do over the years, most recently the enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), nothing has worked to date. Even though, we spent more than twice the average per person ($15,610) on healthcare than any other industrialized nation in the world in 2024, even though we have the best trained and equipped healthcare providers in the world, we are the sickest of them all. Insurance premiums, copays, and out-of-pocket healthcare expenses increase every year. There are about 27 million people who do not have health insurance, about another 26 million people who are underinsured, and there are millions who do not have access to quality, medical care. Overwhelming medical bills is a leading cause of bankruptcy in the USA. Too many people are getting sick at younger and younger ages with serious chronic diseases and conditions such as: heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity. Six out of ten adults have at least one chronic disease and four out of ten at least two. Chronic diseases accounted for about 75% ($3.975 trillion) of the $5.3 trillion spent on healthcare in 2024. For many years now it has been well documented that about 70% of these chronic diseases can be prevented by early detection and people making healthy lifestyle choices. The answer to our healthcare crisis is about accurately identifying the real cause and then doing something about eliminating it. There is only one cause and that is too much disease! Part One describes what our government, insurance companies, and healthcare professionals need to do to ensure that all Americans have access to affordable, quality, healthcare. Part Two delineates what each of us can do to help ourselves and our country end this major problem once and for all.
