OverviewIt was the beginning of adulthood. A few years ago She had a job at the airport. She loved flying and dreamed of a career in aviation. What happened? In this short graphic novel, the female protagonist discovers how Her Reputation was manipulated by rumors. She looks back at the past from other people's points of view to reveal how Her dreams were crushed by men with a personal stake in preserving the status quo. She was ignorant of feminism and how to form a healthy relationship with other people. That was so many years ago; is it too late to make things right? In this debut graphic novel, H. Rhys Tollers shows us that a big part of fighting inequality is simply becoming aware of discrimination. A harmless word, an unrefuted rumor, something left unsaid, all serve to build a foundation for a Reputation -- whether it is deserved or not. Written in an interview style like Neil Gaiman's Violent Cases, with the power of Alison Bechdel's Fun Home, this engaging short story will haunt your memory. Do you know what stories your Reputation tells? It is done in a traditional comic book style with hard outlines to match the linear quality of the airplanes. The visual part of the story sometimes speaks more than the words, Rhys says. Whether she is writing literary fiction or speculative fiction she is most likely to be championing the underdog. I think the most important thing I can accomplish as a writer is to help people accept that diversity and difference are good things -- whether it's gender, race, religion, or anything else.
