Stih has owned a microscope since 1978 when, as teenagers, he and his brothers were in the newspaper for setting up a laboratory in the laundry room of their parent's home. He studied at the McCrone Research Institute and holds a certificate for completing courses that include Advanced Indoor Air Quality: Advanced Fungal Spore Identification. The microscope he uses was set up for him by Los Alamos National Laboratories.Stih is an aerospace engineer and worked at Motorola for eleven years before he quit his job, moved to a small town, and became a handyman.
