Renewable Energy Resources Assessment and Development in MENA/Mediterranean Regions

Overview

The book Renewable Energy Resources Assessment and Development in MENA/Mediterranean Regions highlights the central role of the Middle East, North Africa, and the Mediterranean Basin in the global energy transition. This region boasts exceptional natural potential, receiving more than 20% of the planet's solar radiation and boasting vast areas suitable for wind energy, making it a key area for the development and export of clean energy. The book provides an in-depth assessment of available resources and presents analyses of solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass energy. It highlights the challenges and opportunities related to green hydrogen, hybrid systems, and technological innovations that are already shaping the energy future. Through case studies in Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Egypt, and Kuwait, it illustrates the national strategies and concrete projects that are transforming the region. Clear, documented, and forward-looking, this book is a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and investors. It demonstrates that the energy transition represents both an environmental necessity and a tremendous economic opportunity, capable of positioning the MENA and Mediterranean regions as a major hub for sustainable energy.

Author Information

Prof. Abdellah Henni received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Sétif and the University of M’sila, respectively. His Ph.D. thesis was entitled Elaboration of thin films based on metal oxides on transparent supports and their photovoltaic applications. In 2015, he joined the University of Kasdi Merbah (Ouargla, Algeria) as an Associate Professor. He is currently a researcher in the Laboratory of Dynamics, Interactions and Reactivity of Systems at the University of Ouargla (Algeria), and a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biology at Cégep de Valleyfield (Québec, Canada). Dr. Henni also serves as a reviewer for numerous international scientific journals indexed in WoS and Scopus. His research interests focus on the development of advanced engineered nanomaterials and thin films for optoelectronic applications. He has extensive experience in the fabrication, processing, and characterization of both inorganic and organic nanomaterials. Prof. Abdelazim Negm is Professor of hydraulics (and water resources) in the water and water structures engineering department at the Faculty of Engineering at Zagazig University (ZU). He worked as a demonstrator in the Faculty of Engineering, ZU, in 1986 and continued there until he occupied the position of Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs. He worked at the Egypt–Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST) as a Professor of Water Resources from December 2012 to September 2016. He served as Chairperson of the Environmental Engineering Department at E-JUST from March 2013 to March 2016. Professor Negm has published more than 350 scientific papers in national and international journals and conferences, and about 100 book chapters. He has participated in over eighty-five conferences and served as a Keynote Speaker at several national and international conferences. He has been awarded prizes for best papers three times. His research areas include hydraulics, hydrology, and water resources. Currently, he is very interested in sustainability studies, sustainable development, and the green environment in addition to water resources management. He is a member of the editorial board of several scientific journals and international conferences and was a member of the organizing committee of Oceanography 2015. Additionally, he was Secretary-General of the IWTC from 2013 until 2017 and then Member of the scientific committee. He was Head of the ZU committee for assessment of the scientific publications of ZU faculties until December 2018. Prof. Djamal Zerrouki was born in Algeria, in 1979. He received M.Sci. in 2004. He joined the research group of Prof. J Bibette  at ESPCI Paris, France, and received her Ph.D. degree in 2007 from UPMC University . He joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at Ouargla University, Algeria, in 2008 as Associate Professor. He is currently Full Professor of chemical engineering at the University of Ouargla and leads the laboratory of dynamic, interaction, and reactivity of physical chemistry systems.  Her research interests focuses on the environmental biotechnology, green process Engineering, material sciences, nanoparticles synthesis.
