OverviewThe aim of the study is to produce activated carbon using melon seed shell, which is a harmless, cheaper, and abundant agricultural raw material, with ZnCl2 as an activating agent to remove cadmium and chromium from industrial wastewater. A two-step process, which involves carbonization of the watermelonseed shell followed by activation of the carbon, was used for the production of activated carbon. The characteristics of melon seed shell were determined. The percentages of cadmium and chromium removal were determined using the batch method at contact time. Characteristics of melon seed shell values are: %Ash content 2.8, pH = 6.96, conductivity =0.024, %burn off = 46, bulk density = 0.26 and yield = 54 respectively. The adsorption of cadmium and chromium against contact time(t) onto the adsorbents established that the rate of uptake of both cadmium and chromium on the adsorbent increased simultaneously with respect to time. However, the maximum uptake for chromium was at 120 and 150 minutes, while cadmium was at 150 minutes, which shows that equilibrium had achieved at those times.
