OverviewJoe O'Farrell's parents lived in Londonderry, Northern Ireland at a time of conflict between Catholics and Protestants. At the turn of the 20th century, his parents immigrated to Long Island, New York. That is where Joe and his brother, John, were born. At the end of World War I, Joe and John left New York for Pennsylvania, seeking work in a coal mine. There Joe met Goldie, his pastor's niece. They were married the following year, and the brothers went to work in the Reilly NO.1 mine in nearby Spangler, Pennsylvania. Less than a year after that, they experienced one of the most disastrous mine explosions in the nation's history. John died, and Joe suffered a serious injury. He left the church and turned to alcohol. But Goldie and Joe raised six very successful children. Years later, one of his many grandchildren helped him make his biggest decision.
