Remains

Overview

If you were stuck in a small space after a disaster, alone, but have everything you need to survive... Could you handle it? Could your mind handle it? Remains is a character-versus-self survival story that will immerse you in the experiences and thoughts of an average American man, Sam, when he awakens, stuck in his pantry, following a catastrophic event. Sam finds that he has access to all of the basic necessities for survival, physically, but cannot escape, and soon faces unexpected psychological, emotional, and spiritual challenges, plus crippling physical issues. The mood of the story shifts from clever and humorous to ironic and disturbing throughout our subject's journey seeking escape and relief. Sam's greatest obstacles are loneliness, physical, and mental health, all manifesting from varying and often unexpected sources. Intelligent, thoughtful, and compassionate, Sam finds that his predicament is the type that no one could prepare for. His mind becomes his only companion and a source of great conflict. While very relatable, the story delivers open, but often uncomfortable access to a private and perpetually shrinking world and mind. Although dependent upon an apocalyptic pretense, the story, itself, is more concerned with character than cause. The story is based on realistic conjecture and presented with stark transparency. As a partner and parent, Sam wrestles with problems that you may relate to and sympathize with, but the development provides twists, surprises, and a full-range of emotions along the way. Remains is intended for adult audiences and some scenes are not intended for sensitive readers (language, disturbing violence, sexual content, and more!). Fun fact: The first draft of Remains was mostly composed on an iPhone.

Reviews

""This book hits all the emotions. Happy. Sad. Humor. Life. Serialization. I read all 18 chapters in five days and I am not an avid reader. Don't miss out on this first addition. Well worth the money. I truly loved it and could not put it down."" Cathie Y. ""Well written, incredible story, I was hooked from first to last pages."" Erin M. ""Wow!!! I'm so glad that I was lucky enough to meet the author at the Decatur Book Festival and get a signed copy. I loved so many aspects of this book. On the surface, it's a book about a man trapped in his pantry during a nuclear apocalypse. But there is so much more than that just beneath the surface. It was equal parts disturbing, uncomfortable, moving, and comforting. Jensen does an absolutely excellent job, and I am so excited to see what he writes next."" Victoria R. ""Amazing book! So well written. I loved it."" Cheryl B. ""This is a dark story of survival, a story of loneliness, a story of dispare, a story of helplessness. Trapped with nothing but his own mind the main character must deal with an unknown painful situation. Written in the present tense, it is designed with an immediacy to every miniscule action in this psychological thriller. Warning, graphic content. A binge read."" Zack B. ""This book is great and I would highly recommend. I would describe this as a psychological[sic] thriller. 10/10 would recommend."" Aristotle J.

Author Information

Sky Jensen is a name that some may recognize from music scenes across the Southeastern United States. Having graced stages as a singer, songwriter, guitar player, DJ, and other forms of entertainment since 1993, some know him as a solo musician, some as the front-person for Part-Time Weekends, Swamp Dog, Brackish Sound, Nuclear Saturday, Lee Rd., and more. Others may recognize him from raves across the U.S., as KYSĀ, one of the Drum 'n Bass DJ's for The Magic City Junglists and founder of Link Productions. He has collaborated with some of the finest musicians, producers, artists, entertainers, and writers in Atlanta.Sky began writing early, loving poetry and the idea of writing professionally. Fortunately, the realization that he is ""just not that good"" of a poet befell him before attempting to publish anything significant. His songwriting became the avenue to express that passion. Sky is a personal and professional coach, also working to publish his methods of growth and transformation. In the world of Literature, his first encounter was one of inspiration, passion and flow (see ""previously published and long lost works by Sky Jensen: ""Using The Force"" ca. 1999), with the story and development of ""Remains"" overtaking his mind and life over the course of 12 weeks in 2023. He did not choose the story, nor could he stop it from materializing. Most of the 120,000 word manuscript was written on an iPhone, throughout his days and nights, any time the next portion manifested. The process was disturbing... He found a way to conceal his personal agenda into a work of fiction: First as a personal project, now available to the world, at the request of his most trusted constituents. Personally, he is a middle-aged father and husband, working to provide for his family and wrestling with many of the same concepts touched in ""Remains"" (but he won't tell you which ones). His professional life also provides a vast pool of experiences from which to resource information. He is a recovering addict and alcoholic, and is not afraid to leverage knowledge both from his time as a substance user and since beginning his journey of recovery. He is a former public schoolteacher, was raised by schoolteachers, has worked extensively in hospitality, and is presently a business professional. He has volunteered for numerous charitable organizations, including Relay for Life and Atlanta Dance Marathon, and is always seeking new ways to help those less fortunate. He is deeply spiritual, but not religious. Sky was adopted at four-months-old and only recently reconnected with his surviving biological family. Sky grew up in Stone Mountain, GA, a suburb of Atlanta, and is proud to have participated in the evolution of that beautiful city. These days, he is writing and producing from Madeira Beach, Florida, a suburb of St. Petersburg, in The Greater Tampa Bay Metro Area.
