He was President of the Ecclesiastical History Society 2002-3 and of CIHEC (international organisation of historians of Christianity) 2005-10. He has held visiting positions at the Universities of Amsterdam, Uppsala, Münster, Mainz, and Swedish Collegium for Advanced Studies and received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Lund and Helsinki and the Open University.
