RELATION BETWEEN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PLACES IN CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN MAYA LOWLANDS CITIES FROM PRECLASSIC TO TERMINAL CLASSIC Following the lead of a few archaeologists, we synchronically and diachronically explore the layout of monumental epicenters in a body of selected Classic Maya cities, in an attempt to elucidate the presence and role of distinct political factions and to modelize the political history of those cities. Focusing spatial segments defined in those monumental epicenters of Maya cities, we aim at understanding how such social segments corresponded to distinct entities spatially circumscribed and how they were articulated to the political structure, exploring architecture, the spatial relations and the access modes .. In recent years, attention has focused upon the royal court in Classic Maya realms. This, in turn, led to recognize the importance of kingly houses in the political sphere. When excavated, residential compounds were shown to have sheltered plainly collective activities. Conversely, groups of monumental buildings formerly labeled 'secondary civic-ceremonial centers' have been reinterpreted as residential complexes of local elites. Such progress in data elucidation requires that we tackle the subtle distinction between residential and collective functions in private and public built spaces. The spatial articulation between both basically functional units leads us to discuss the various sociopolitical aspects of Maya societies and the diachronic analysis of construction sequences gives us some clues to modelize the relationships between political factions and their strategies, suggesting 'cities biographies', helping to restitute their political history independently of the epigraphic information provided by glyphic inscriptions decipherment.
