Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Rehabilitate Sai Ying Pun District through preservation Submitted by Mak Hin Shing, Ian for the degree of Master of Urban Design at the University of Hong Kong in November 2007 Conservation becomes the hot topic in Hong Kong. The government policies prefer to preserve an individual building instead of the historical zone. The Star Ferry Pier is a good example, the Star Ferry Pier historical zone include the city hall, the Queen's Pier and the Star Ferry Pier itself. The government always isolate the citizen's opinion and try to demolish them one by one. The bonding of the historical zone is lost; the value of an individual building is reduced and individual building conservation is not sufficient for sustainability. As you may know Sai Ying Pun is a decline district in terms of the buildings and population structure. Developer may think redevelopment, demolish the whole street block is the best way to improve the living quality. Nevertheless, do they think of the existing urban context and the existing activities are also very important for generating a vibrant district. Sai Ying Pun is being a district with unique background, streetscape and shop houses. Therefore, in this thesis I'm going get the balance between preservation and development. and find out the possible way to enhance the existing urban characteristics and add value to the shop houses in order to invest money for its own preservation. We are providing nice living and working environment to attract new generation to live here, so that our district can be rehabilitated. Rehabilitation is not only about the buildings but also the population structure. ii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3970742 Subjects: Historic districts - China - Hong KongCity planning - China - Hong KongSociology, Urban - China - Hong KongSai Ying PunWestern District Full Product DetailsAuthor: 麥衍成 , Hin-Shing Ian MakPublisher: Open Dissertation Press Imprint: Open Dissertation Press Dimensions: Width: 21.60cm , Height: 0.40cm , Length: 27.90cm Weight: 0.218kg ISBN: 9781360967677ISBN 10: 1360967672 Publication Date: 24 January 2017 Audience: General/trade , General Format: Paperback Publisher's Status: Active Availability: Temporarily unavailable ![]() The supplier advises that this item is temporarily unavailable.
