Regierungsjahre: Die Datierungen Der Monumentalinschriften Aus Dem Agyptischen Neuen Reich

Overview

This study examines and documents the datings from the Egyptian New Kingdom, focusing on hieroglyphic evidence. The aim is to analyze the long and short dates, their relationship to one another, and whether the use of one or the other dating type is subject to certain conventions. The dates are listed chronologically in a catalog (Chapter VIII). Within each reign, the dates are arranged chronologically, beginning with the long dates, i.e., dates that include both the regnal year and the month and day (see below). A brief description of the form is added separately to each catalog entry. In the preceding evaluation section (Chapters I-VII), the dated documents are discussed from several perspectives using the catalog. First (Chapter I) provides a brief description of the development of dating before the 18th Dynasty. Chapter II further analyzes and discusses the information obtained from the catalog on the design of the dates. The expected regularities in the design are further summarized. Chapter III discusses the form of dating. This concerns two main types: short dates, i.e., those containing only a regnal year, and long dates. Their integration into the text is then analyzed. Further sections report on orthography and rhetorical expressions in the dating protocol. The last three sections deal with special forms such as partial dates (multiple dates), ""incomplete"" long dates (monthly dates), or period dates. Chapter IV examines the dates and their inscriptions for their affiliation. Based on this categorization, Chapter V then presents and discusses the various events that were dated. These can be royal or private events and inscriptions. Chapter VI also introduces the text carriers, some of which were dated more frequently than others. Chapter VII concludes: Some destroyed dates could be reconstructed, others could be attributed to a king, and some were removed from the documentation. Finally, the relationship between long and short dates is presented and discussed.
