Overview

In 1984, the Archaeological Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences launched a complex research project focusing on the settlement archaeology of the Great Hungarian Plain. The Gyomaendrőd region in County Békés was selected as the study area. Conducted between 1985 and 1992, the project's goal was the examination of the settlement patterns and settlement history of every archaeological period in an area that has been well researched archaeologically, where sites from several periods have an outstandingly high concentration. The research project focused on the time span between the Neolithic and the Ottoman period. By examining the micro-region, the aim was the reconstruction of the changes in settlement patterns during successive eras, the identification of different settlement types existing simultaneously in a particular period, an analysis of the interaction between the settlements and their environment, and to collect as much data as possible for the reconstruction of the one-time vegetation and subsistence strategies (arable farming, stockbreeding). Additionally, it was a goal to clarify various chronological issues related to each period (3rd-5th, 8th-10th centuries), and to identify the central places of the settlement network, as well as the settlement hierarchy.
