Refugee is a moving, stunning piece of literature that enthralled, entertained and enchanted me from the very first page. Aimee Anne. What I liked most about this book was that as I read it, I got so engrossed in it that I felt like I was a silent character who was following the protagonist everywhere. Rosemary Oko Reece Pocock creates a fine study of how ordinary people are swept along by political and military events over which they have no control, but which continue to colour their daily lives. Boris of Adelaide. Rolf Krieger's journey takes him from a devastated Germany after WW2 to a refugee camp and eventually to South Australia. His family was killed during the bombing and there is nothing left to keep him in his homeland. He finds prejudice but eventually friends and a job. He falls in love with the beautiful widow Elaine. Her two children are part of the package, but he is not deterred. However, the war won't go away and what happened during the conflict comes back and threatens his happiness as he tries to keep Elaine in his life and make the war go away and leave him alone.
