OverviewThis study examines the potential of using propane (R290) as an alternative refrigerant to R134a in cold storage systems. R290 offers environmental benefits due to its zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and low global warming potential (GWP). Through experimental analysis, including performance and safety evaluations, R290's suitability is assessed. Initial findings indicate comparable or superior performance in cooling capacity and energy efficiency compared to R134a. Effective safety measures, such as leak detection systems and explosion-proof equipment, mitigate the risks associated with R290's flammability. Transitioning to R290 could significantly reduce environmental impact while maintaining refrigeration efficiency. However, further research is needed to address safety concerns and promote widespread adoption.
