Red Raven – Black Poppy: Regula Syz

Overview

In her paintings, the Swiss artist Regula Syz (b. 1946) opens up a space for contradiction. They depict blossoming life, but also foreboding and destruction. To this end, the artist works with elementary manifestations of the life cycle, which she links to humankind's internal and external struggles. Regula Syz's oeuvre, which spans more than fifty years, is characterised by a turning point in 1999: a studio residency in Genoa marked her transition from precise watercolour techniques to large-format acrylic paintings; beauty and harmony were followed by expressiveness and movement. Red Raven – Black Poppy focuses on this second phase of her work, though it also features earlier works and excerpts from her sketchbooks, allowing for a comprehensive exploration of Syz's artistic practice. Text in English and German. AUTHOR: Regula Syz was born in Zurich in 1946. After training as a primary school teacher, she graduated from the School of Design in Zurich and the Académie Henri Goetz in Paris. From 1973 she worked in her own studio. In 1999/2000, during a residency in the studio of the Kunstverein Olten in Genoa, her work underwent a radical change. She lived and worked in Genoa until 2003. This was followed by longer stays in Berlin, Acqui Terme and Paris until 2015. Regula Syz lives and works in Uster, Uttwil and Zumikon in Switzerland. She has been a member of the SGBK (Schweizerische Gesellschaft Bildender Künstlerinnen) since 1974 and a member of the professional association Visarte since 2001. SELLING POINTS: . A comprehensive examination of the artistic practice of the painter Regula Syz . Also features earlier works and excerpts from her sketchbooks
