OverviewThis work aims to provide an accessible introduction and guide to the records of the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland from the 16th to the mid-20th centuries. It presents an integrated survey of the collections of archival material concerning the history of the Catholic Church in Ireland, which is largely located in Rome and London. References to relevant finding aids and printed volumes of manuscript material, which are difficult for historians in Ireland to access, are interspersed. The nature and content of major relevant collections such as the Carew papers, the Stuart papers, papal registers and the Irish annates is outlined. The principal Irish Catholic journals and periodicals and thier contents are discussed and material stored in archives in France, Belgium and the Iberian peninsula is treated. Some of the practical problems and limitations associated with accessing and researching Catholic Chruch sources are outlined by the authors and practical advice is provided.
