OverviewTheology, and thus Christians, have a responsibility to interpret and shape the world from the centre of their faith - J.B. Metz refers to this as the 'memoria passionis'. The memory of Jesus' suffering, death and resurrection connects this one passion with the many passions of humanity and opens up the memory of God in biblical traditions to culturally and religiously pluralistic worlds. The unity of love for God and neighbour as a Jewish heritage means passion for God and compassion for others; it is the political mysticism of compassion. In this, the experiences of suffering in the world can be gathered, preserved from despair and oblivion, and encourage new hope through solidarity in practice. A shared memory of suffering could unite the world religions in a common practice of global responsibility.
