The Confederacy's only national naval academy was anchored in Virginia's James River aboard the CSS Patrick Henry. James Lee Conrad is a colonel in the U.S. Air Force Advocate General's Department. He has spent a lifetime studying Confederate naval history and is the author of a previous book on Confederate military institutions. He lives in Ohio.
