OverviewIf reading is a visible language, what takes place when braille is read by a blind person? In this work, Susanna Millar reveals a series of studies employing video recordings to analyse the exact hand and finger movements in both skilled and novice braillists. Because learning and reading by touch is often slower than visual reading, processes like the development and interaction of linguistic skills can be studied in a new way. Other questions posed include the differences between children and literate adults learning braille late in life and whether prose reading processes are the same for text and braille.
