OverviewIdaho is a Campers paradise, and about as wild in many places, as it gets in the lower 48. Bordered by Montana and Wyoming to the east, Nevada and Utah to the south, and Oregon and Washington to the west, this is truly some beautiful country. Many of the free campgrounds in Idaho are accessed by gravel road only. But not to worry, most are 2 Wheel drive accessible. However, you may want to consider a high clearance vehicle. And these gravel roads are going to lead you through some of the most beautiful and rugged country you are likely to see anywhere. From the Bonners Ferry area to the north and then south through St. Maries, and even further south to Grangeville and east to the Historic towns of Elk City and Dixie then south to Boise and the middle fork of the Boise River and points east, this state has it all. Idaho also has an abundance of what are known as ""Sportsmans Access"" sites. You'll see signs indicating these sites everywhere. I only visited a small number of these sites, and most were real finds. Check them out, most seem to have bathrooms and at least fire rings.
