OverviewYears of poems from incarcerated writer, Jon Oak, finally comes together in one collection, RAVEL. Composed in the confinements of prison walls, these poems articulate the desire to connect with life outside. Jon Oak does regard the subject of prison, but he prefers to broaden the scope of his material to the abstract, the surreal, and is more interested in self-examination/emotional understanding. There are heavy dips into themes like depression and anger - the first half of the book covers a lot of cynicism - RAVEL eventually weaves outward, toward a renewed perspective that challenges its darker aspects. It covers healing and transformation, sadness, love, coping with grief... these all are personal poems. They are an escape from prison. Many of the poems disregard any conventional or fixed style, and others follow their own set of rules. They explore discombobulation and nonsense. They explore the realms of dreams. Some are straight-forward, to-the-point and bleak, while others interchange between reality and revelations that are not meant to be understood easily. Our reality is sublime, and Jon Oak finds many ways to comprehend his place within it - or at least tries. Whether the subject matter is spiritual, down-to-earth, or somewhere in between, RAVEL threads them into a personal experience that Jon Oak realizes we're all a part of.
