The author begins by covering various popular dog breeds and their characteristics that may or may not be a good match for you and your family. Then you need to decide where to select or buy your puppy from. The author provides some good advice and cautions against puppy mills and even pet stores, as most of them acquire their puppies from mills. Nourishment is of course a key factor when it comes to puppy health and there are excellent tips here on what type of food to provide (dry kibble, wet, combination?), how often to feed your puppy, and what foods to avoid (e.g. chocolate, alcohol). How many people realize that onions, garlic, and dairy products could be harmful to their dogs? House training essentials, dog-training commands, and social & behavioral training are explored. Strategies on discipline are provided with good explanations. The book ends with a really good summary, called ""15 simple ways to care for your puppy"".
