OverviewWhen Railway Portraits was published in 2006, no thought was given to subsequent volumes. The success of this book and the enthusiastic response from railwaymen, enthusiasts, modellers and the public alike, has led to the publication of Railway Portraits Volume Two. Robert and Bruce Wheatley's photographic style was influenced by their exposure as schoolboys to the railway scene. Their parents allowed them, at ages 13 and 16, to spend their school holidays wandering the NSW railway system. They travelled in the guards van on goods trains from town to town, rode in the locomotive cab with the driver and fireman and at night slept outdoors or in the stations waiting room. The wisdom of their parents allowing such freedom was often called into question! The evocative photographs in Railway Portraits Volume Two record the final days of the steam era and a way of life that is now part of our transport history.
